The Modern Job Search: What Are Candidates Really Looking For?

We recently surveyed jobseekers to understand what drives their decision-making in today’s job market. The results? Not too surprising – the modern workforce is looking for more than just a higher salary. So what exactly are candidates prioritising?

Why Salary Alone Isn’t Enough Anymore

Let’s be honest – most people want to earn more money. With the rising cost of living, it’s understandable. But salary alone isn’t the only motivator anymore. Today’s candidates are looking at the whole package, and what truly improves their day-to-day lives.

We’ve outlined the four key factors that candidates are telling us matter most when considering a new role.

  1. Work-Life Balance Comes First

Topping the list is work-life balance. Candidates want roles that allow them to live their lives – not just work.

That includes:

  • Flexible or hybrid working arrangements
  • Reduced commuting times
  • Support with childcare
  • Wellbeing benefits like gym memberships or mental health support

All of these help reduce stress and personal costs, meaning salary becomes less of a deciding factor when everything else feels right.

  1. Salary & Total Remuneration

Unsurprisingly, salary and benefits still rank high – coming in second in our survey. Everyone wants to feel fairly compensated for their time and skills.

It’s worth noting that:

  • Transparency in salary expectations builds trust
  • Added benefits like bonuses, pensions, and private healthcare sweeten the deal
  • Tailored offers based on experience and responsibilities can make a big difference
  1. Career Growth Opportunities

Coming in third, career development matters more than people realise. Some candidates might not consciously prioritise it – but they’ll turn down offers if they don’t see a clear path forward.

Think about:

  • Are there clear progression routes?
  • Does the business offer training or mentorship?
  • Is internal promotion part of the culture?

People want to grow – and they’re not afraid to walk away from roles that limit their potential.

  1. A Positive Work Culture

Last on the list – but far from least – is company culture. With so much talk about “culture fit” on LinkedIn and beyond, we were surprised to see it rank fourth. However, candidates often assume a decent culture is a given – until it’s not.

Employees thrive in environments that are:

  • Supportive
  • Transparent
  • Inclusive
  • And where people genuinely enjoy coming to work

Common Questions from Candidates

  1. What work-life balance benefits should I be looking for?
  • Flexibility for childcare or medical appointments
  • Hybrid or remote working
  • Time-off policies and wellbeing perks
  1. What does career progression really look like?
  • Ask if the business has a clear structure or roadmap for growth
  • Are promotions performance-based? Is mentorship available?
  • Don’t be afraid to ask about these things in your interview — it shows ambition
  1. How can I spot a strong company culture during an interview?
  • Pay attention to how team members behave and interact
  • Are people smiling? Do they seem relaxed and respectful?
  • Don’t be afraid to ask to meet more of the team or have a tour – great employers welcome it

Common Questions from Employers

  1. How do I know if hybrid working suits my business?
  • Trial it. If productivity remains high and team engagement improves, it’s a win
  • Some staff thrive in hybrid models – others prefer the office. Offer choice where possible
  1. Does improving work-life balance reduce output?
  • Not at all. In fact, it often increases productivity
  • Happy, balanced employees are more focused, loyal, and effective
  1. Should I be concerned if a candidate asks lots of questions at interview?
  • Quite the opposite! Curious candidates show genuine interest
  • It suggests they’re assessing you as much as you’re assessing them – which is a good sign
